2010 Symposium Faculty Bios:
John H. Armstrong, M.D.
is a medical educator and trauma surgeon from the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, FL, and has extensive experience in health care policy-making and advocacy at the federal and state levels. He has testified before Congress on behalf of the members of the American Medical Association. He has spoken extensively at the national level on effective advocacy, consumer-directed healthcare, pay-for-performance, disaster preparedness, and membership in organized medicine. He currently serves as Chair of the Surgical Caucus of the American Medical Association (AMA) and member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) delegation to the AMA House of Delegates (HOD); member of the ACS Health Policy Steering Committee; member of the Executive Committee of the National Disaster Life Support Educational Consortium; and member of the founding Editorial Board of the Journal of Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness. Dr. Armstrong graduated from Princeton University with an economics degree in 1984 and the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1988.
David Leopold, M.D.
specializes in Integrative medicine with interest in integrative pain management, wellness and lifestyle management, integrative cancer care, cardiovascular disease care, and lifelong weight management. He also serves as Director of Integrative Medical Education at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, California. Dr. Leopold completed his medical internship and residency in Family Medicine at the University Of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. Dr. Leopold completed a Fellowship in Integrative Pain Management at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. He is a recipient of the Bravewell Scholarship for Integrative Medicine, and has completed a Fellowship at the University Of Arizona School Of Medicine, Program in Integrative Medicine, with Dr. Andrew Weil. Dr. Leopold is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Family Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Leopold is also Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management. He is a certified medical acupuncturist, and has advanced training in non-pharmacological treatment of pain and diseases, including natural supplements, food as medicine and mind-body medicine.
Anna Barbato, M.D.
is the newest Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. She received her Pharm.D. from the University of Mississippi in2005. She completed an ASHP accredited pharmacy practice residency with the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. After completing her residency, she served as a staff pharmacist and interim clinical director at Midwest Regional Medical Center in Midwest City, Okla. Dr. Barbato became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) in 2009.Her first professional publication, "Prazosin for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Nightmares in a Refugee Population," will be in the November issue of the Journal of Psychiatric Practice. The paper is based on her research during her residency in Seattle. She is interested in geriatrics and will help establish the Pacific Island Geriatric Education Center.
Jennifer Tseng, M.D.
is a surgical oncologist and outcomes researcher with a focus on risk prediction in pancreatic, hepatobiliary, and gastric cancers. She is also an Associate Professor of Surgery and Cancer Biology, a Director, Surgical Outcomes Analysis & Research (SOAR) and UMass Pancreas Program University of Massachusetts Medical School Worcester, Massachusetts. She graduated from Stanford University and the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, as well as obtaining a MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Tseng served as resident (PGY 1-5) and Chief Resident (Staff Surgeon, PGY 6) in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as a 3 year postdoctoral research fellowship in the laboratory of Richard Mulligan, PhD, followed by Surgical Oncology fellowship at MD Anderson. She joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, in 2005, and established her UMass outcomes research group, Surgical Outcomes Analysis & Research (SOAR), which currently includes 3 surgical resident research residents, 2 biostatisticians, an MD postdoctoral fellow, 2 research nurses, a research coordinator, and a rotating cast of medical, graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Tseng collaborates with the UMass Center for Outcomes Research, directed by Dr. Fred Anderson, which has extensive experience with multinational registries for academic and industry goals; with the UMass Departments of Cancer Biology, Molecular Medicine, and Quantitative Health Sciences; as well as externally with the Harvard School of Public Health, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and MIT/Broad Institute. Current research efforts include prediction modeling, risk score development, and Markov decision analyses, and development of prospective blood- and tissue-linked databases to identify biomarkers that will aid in the diagnosis, response to treatment, overall survival and quality of life in patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Tseng has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers and given numerous talks at national and international meetings.
John Patrick, M.D.
retired from the University of Ottawa in June 2002. He had been Associate Professor in Clinical Nutrition in the Department of Biochemistry and Pediatrics for twenty years. Dr. Patrick's medical training was in London, England. He has done extensive research into the treatment of childhood nutritional deficiency and related diseases holding appointments in Britain, the West Indies and Canada. He has worked in Central Africa assisting in the development of training programs that deal with childhood protein-energy malnutrition. Dr. Patrick now lectures throughout the world working for the Christian Medical and Dental Society in Canada and the Christian Medical and Dental Association in the United States. He speaks frequently to Christian and secular groups and is able to communicate effectively on moral issues in medicine and culture and the integration of faith and science. Dr. Patrick supports the Canadian Registry of Hippocratic Physicians. The objective of which is to provide a mechanism for identifying practitioners who practice or are preparing to practice Hippocratic medicine, and to bring together practitioners who have an ethical consensus. It also enables practitioners to group together in order to have more influence and impact in their practices, their hospitals, and their communities.
Bill Alto, M.D., MPH
is a Professor of Community and Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School and a faculty member at Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency. He has 12 years experience overseas working overseas as a primary care physician, public health official, and consultant. The author of the Little Black Book of International Medicine and an American Family Physician monograph on Travel's Medicine, he runs a travelers' medicine clinic in Maine.
Dale Glenn M.D.
joined Straub Clinic & Hospital in 2000 and is board certified in family medicine. He received his Doctorate of Medicine from the John A. Burns Schools of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania - Hahnemann University. He has served as the Clinical Advisor of Hawai'i Pacific Health's Epic (electronic medical record system) Project since 2001 and now serves as the Medical Director of Information Systems for Straub. Dr. Glenn has been a director of HPH since 2009.
Katharyn Daub Ed.D.
is a Professor and Director of the University of Hawaii at Hilo's School of Nursing. She has her Doctorate in Education and Master of Nursing in Education. She has been a nurse for over 25 years and a Nurse Educator for 14 years. She was raised on the Island of Lanai and has lived on the Big Island for 23 years. She is married and has two sons.
Bill Crounse, M.D.
is Worldwide Health Director for the Microsoft Corporation. He is responsible for providing thought leadership, vision, and strategy for Microsoft technologies and solutions in the healthcare provider industry. He is also responsible for working with industry partners and healthcare organizations to help them benefit from using Microsoft technologies and solutions as an essential platform for line-of-business applications in the healthcare industry. Dr. Crounse travels nationally and internationally to evangelize the use of information technology as a way to improve care quality and safety, and the satisfaction of those who provide and receive it. Dr. Crounse is a frequent keynote speaker at national and international conferences and healthcare leadership events on the application of information technology in medicine and e-health initiatives. He is also an expert on the growing consumer movement in healthcare and employer perspectives and issues in the provision of healthcare benefits. Dr. Crounse is known locally and nationally for his work in medical communications. He has written dozen of articles for www.microsoft.com/healthcare and is the primary contributor to Microsoft's Health Blog http://blogs/msdn.com/healthblog/ . Dr. Crounse, a residency trained family physician, is a graduate of the Medical University of Ohio. Prior to joining Overlake Hospital in 1995, Dr. Crounse was a physician and medical executive with Virginia Mason Medical Center and Group Health in Seattle.
Karen Pellegrin Ph.D.
received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Florida and her M.B.A. from The Citadel. Her professional experience in the healthcare industry includes patient care, teaching, research, administration, and consulting. Dr. Pellegrin served as a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) for 8 years and Director of Quality Management for the MUSC Medical Center for 4 years. She then served for over 7 years as an executive for Compass Point Research, a clinical trials company, including as its Vice President for Quality Management and Strategic Planning, Chief Compliance Officer, and most recently as its President. Dr. Pellegrin has a strong track record of building infrastructure in support of strategic goals.
Sidna Tulledge-Scheitel M.D.
is a practicing physician in Primary Care Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic and the medical director for Global Products and Services at Mayo Clinic. She has been active in providing clinical insight to help shape Mayo Clinic Health Manager, and will continue to play that role as its medical director. Dr. Tulledge-Scheitel also serves as an assistant professor in the Mayo School of Medicine. She has served as vice-chair on the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement Board of Directors, and she is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles with a special interest in care-delivery models, preventive service delivery and disease management. Dr. Tulledge-Scheitel received her medical training from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. She completed her residency in internal medicine and preventive medicine and a fellowship in preventative medicine and preventative health at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. In addition to her medical training, Dr. Tulledge-Scheitel has a master's in public health. She has spoken on a variety of topics including disease management, overcoming barriers to behavioral change and electronic practice guidelines.
Mark Allen Young, M.D., MBA
As a practicing academic physician, humanitarian, researcher and international lecturer, Dr. Mark Young has shared his vast knowledge of women's health, rehabilitation, pain management, wellness and nutrition with lay and scientific audiences all across the world. His lectures on "Pain and the Musculoskeletal System: A Tale of Two Genders", based on his best selling book "Women and Pain", Dr. Young has served as keynote speaker on Pain Topics in many different venues including the Women's Health Congress in Hilton Head, The Illinois State Annual Women's Health Conference. The International Association for the Study of Pain in Sydney, Australia (IASP) and the International Society of PR&M ( Prague, Brazil, Israel Portugal and Korea), to name a few. Dr. Young has authored over 70 medical Currently, Dr. Mark Allen Young is Chair of the Department of PM&R & Pain at The Maryland Rehabilitation Center and the Workforce and Technology Center of the State of Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS). He holds a faculty appointment at the University of Maryland, The New York University and is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Sciences & Rehabilitation within the NY College of Podiatric medicine. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of PM&R, Fellow of the American College of Pain Management, Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of The Johns Hopkins Physicians and Surgeons Association.
Linda Hole, M.D.
is a graduate of Duke, Princeton, & Oneness Universities, & has served on Faculties of American Academy of Pain Management (Education Committee), American Holistic Medical Association (HARPS rep), Gonzaga Integrative Medicine Seminars, Physicians for Peace, TCM College of Hawaii, & World Congress on Qigong. Publications include chapters for: "Alternative & Comple-mentary Treatment in Neurologic Illness", Weintraub MD et al; "Cardiac Illness - Integrative Treatment & Prevention", Micozzi MD et al; "Pain Management.
